Frequently asked questions
Have a question for us? So have others! Here’s a few of the answers to questions we get
asked most often. Hopefully this could save you some time.
Fly-tipping is a serious criminal offence in the UK with significant penalties. As of 2025, councils can issue fixed penalty notices of up to £1,000 for fly-tipping offences. If prosecuted in a Magistrates’ Court, fines can reach up to £50,000 or 12 months imprisonment. For severe cases heard in Crown Court, penalties include unlimited fines and up to 5 years imprisonment. Importantly, if you hire an unlicensed waste carrier who then fly-tips your waste, you could face a fine of up to £600 for breaching your household duty of care. Always use a licensed waste removal service like Tip Tidy to protect yourself.
All waste removal companies in the UK must be registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier. You can verify any company’s licence by visiting the Environment Agency’s Public Register at environment.data.gov.uk and searching by company name or registration number. A legitimate waste carrier should be able to provide their registration number upon request. Always ask for a waste transfer note as proof your waste will be disposed of legally. At Tip Tidy, we’re fully licensed and happy to provide our registration details.
No, you don’t need a skip permit if the skip is placed entirely on private land such as your driveway or garden. However, if the skip needs to be placed on a public road, pavement, or highway, a skip licence is required from your local council. Permit fees typically range from £20 to £100 and last 7-14 days depending on your local authority. The skip must also display safety markings and lights if left overnight. Most skip hire companies can arrange the permit on your behalf. Alternatively, our man and van rubbish removal service eliminates the need for permits entirely as we load and remove your waste on the same visit.
Hazardous household waste includes items that can harm human health or the environment if not disposed of correctly. Common examples include: batteries (all types), oil-based paints and varnishes, white spirit and paint stripper, pesticides and weed killers, motor oil, antifreeze and brake fluid, fluorescent tubes and energy-saving bulbs, asbestos, and gas cylinders. These items must never be placed in your regular household bin or poured down drains. Most can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), though some councils offer special collection services. Asbestos requires specialist disposal and should only be handled by licensed contractors. Contact your local council for specific guidance on hazardous waste disposal in your area.
Yes. And this is the first answer.
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, all householders have a legal duty of care to ensure their waste is disposed of correctly. This means you must take reasonable steps to ensure your waste is only given to authorised persons such as your local council, a licensed waste carrier, or a registered recycling centre. If you hire a tradesperson, gardener, or waste removal company who then fly-tips your waste, you can still be held liable and face a fixed penalty notice of up to £600. To protect yourself: always check waste carriers are registered with the Environment Agency, obtain a waste transfer note or receipt as proof, avoid cash-only deals with no paperwork, and be suspicious of prices that seem too good to be true. Your waste remains your legal responsibility until it has been properly disposed of.

After inheriting my late aunt’s house, I was completely overwhelmed by decades of accumulated belongings. The team at Tip Tidy were absolutely brilliant from start to finish.
They arrived on time, worked efficiently, and were incredibly respectful of the sentimental items we wanted to keep. Within a single day, they’d cleared three bedrooms, the garage, and a garden shed that hadn’t been opened since 1987.
What impressed me most was their commitment to recycling. They sorted everything carefully and even donated usable items to local charities on my behalf. The house went from cluttered chaos to show-home ready.
I couldn’t recommend them more highly – they really cleaned up their act and my entire property!
After letting my garden go wild during lockdown, I was faced with what can only be described as a small forest. I’m 72 now and simply couldn’t tackle it myself anymore.
Tip Tidy sent a wonderful team who cleared years of overgrown hedges, tree branches, an old rotting shed, and what felt like several tons of brambles. They even found my old garden bench buried under the ivy!
They were patient, hardworking, and made sure everything went to proper green waste recycling. The lads even offered to make me a cuppa while they worked!
I can finally see my garden again and I’m looking forward to replanting in spring. I’d hedge my bets that you won’t find better service anywhere.
Running a building company means generating a lot of waste, and I don’t have time to mess about with unreliable services. Tip Tidy have been brilliant for my business.
They offer trade accounts with competitive rates, same-day collection when we’re in a pinch, and they always provide proper waste transfer notes for our compliance files. The council inspectors are always impressed with our paperwork!
Whether it’s plasterboard, timber offcuts, old bathroom suites, or rubble, they take the lot. They’ve even helped us out on weekends when a job ran over.
For any tradesperson looking for reliable waste removal, I can’t recommend them highly enough. Concrete results every time – these lot are absolutely solid.
As someone who writes about sustainable living, I was anxious about hiring a rubbish removal service. I’d heard horror stories about companies fly-tipping or sending everything to landfill.
Tip Tidy put my mind completely at ease. They explained their recycling process, showed me their waste carrier licence, and even sent me a breakdown afterwards showing what percentage was recycled, donated, and responsibly disposed of.
We were clearing out after a big declutter – old toys, broken furniture, ancient electronics – and I was thrilled to learn that over 85% of our items were diverted from landfill.
For anyone who cares about the planet but needs help shifting stuff, these are your people. Green team, clean dream!
In estate agency, presentation is everything. A cluttered property simply doesn’t sell, and we often take on instructions for homes that need serious clearing before they’re market-ready.
Tip Tidy have become an invaluable partner for our branch. We recommend them to clients and they always deliver – professional, punctual, and surprisingly affordable. Several of our vendors have commented on how stress-free they made the process.
They’ve helped us turn around properties in record time, getting homes from ‘needs clearing’ to ‘camera-ready’ within days. That speed directly impacts our ability to sell quickly and achieve the best prices for our clients.
A genuine pleasure to work with and highly recommended to anyone in the property industry.
Every landlord’s nightmare – a tenant who does a runner and leaves mountains of rubbish behind. I’ve had it happen three times now, and each time Tip Tidy have been my first call.
The first time was the worst: furniture, clothes, rotting food, and what I can only describe as ‘mystery bags’. The Tip Tidy team came the next day, cleared the entire two-bed flat, and even gave it a basic clean so my contractors could get in to redecorate.
They’re now on speed dial. Fast response, fair prices, and they understand that every day a property sits empty is money lost.
If you’re a landlord, save their number. You’ll need it eventually, and you’ll be glad you did!
